UNIVERSITY OF ARIZONA
MEINEL OPTICAL SCIENCES BUILDING
Supporting Advanced Science Education
The Meinel Optical Sciences Building at the University of Arizona supports one of the world’s leading programs in optics research and education. The facility includes specialized laboratories, clean rooms, classrooms, faculty offices, and collaboration spaces designed to support both advanced research and academic instruction.
Built on an occupied campus, the project required carefully integrated structural and building systems to protect highly sensitive research activities. The facility also incorporates flexible laboratory environments designed to adapt to evolving technologies and future research needs.
Engineering for Precision.
Delivering a Research Facility.
Constructing a facility for precision optical research required strict vibration control and careful sequencing. The building was supported on 98 drilled bell caissons designed to protect sensitive laboratory equipment.
Delivered using CMAR on an active university campus, the project required careful coordination to maintain campus operations. When the rebar supplier ceased operations during construction, Lloyd sourced materials from Texas and self-performed installation to maintain the schedule.
